Panel says judge's Belle Meade Country Club membership not a conduct violation

An appeals panel has ruled that Judge George Paine II's membership in the Belle Meade Country Club — which has no women or blacks as voting members — does not violate the judicial code of conduct, The Washington Post reports.

The narrow 10-8 vote came in response to an anonymous complaint that the judge's membership in the Nashville-area country club violated the conduct code that says judges “should not hold membership in any organization that practices invidious discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion, or national origin.” The club has never had a woman or black man as a resident member in its 110-year history, according to the report.
